“Origins and Function of the ‘mancipatio’”
Abstract
This article examines the theories on the origin and primitive function of mancipatio, by virtue of the study of its economical function and by comparing it to the prestate political organization of the achaic period. We conclude that mancipatio was a ceremony predisposed to make certain the transactions over the peoples' goods, especially the industrial goods that they had had in common.
