Abstract

Indianist historiography has gone beyond the idea that the independence of the Americas implied the abandonment of norms, methods and even governmental institutions used during the Hispanic period.  In light of the above, this article explores the institutions of the campaign of the Mendoza (Argentina) jurisdiction in the XIX century in its transition from the Old Regime to the liberal order.  Notwithstanding the changes the course of time has shown, some things remained in the rural government, in relation to not only the practices, but also substantive legislation -something that could give rise to incompatibilities with both the existing liberal doctrine in those years and the provincial Constitution sanctioned in 1854.
