Abstract

Two bicentennial codes -Austria's criminal code and France's 1804 civil code, enacted with a difference of months at the turn of the XIX century- represent two big branches of codification. Paradoxically, the first has received less attention but has been more disseminated. The present article intends to make up for that imbalance somehow by discussingthe work of two prominent jurists: von Zeiller (1751-1828), who prepared the Austrian code, and Vasconcelos (1795-1850), who re-elaborated it upon composing the 1830 Código criminal do imperio do Brasil.Through the 1848 Spanish version, this legal corpus was imposed in the Hispanic countries in three continents, from Portugal to Hispanic America and the Philippines.
